I was planning to go to Schaefler. The weather looked OK. There was apparently snow after Ebenalp, so I packed avalanche gear and my crampons, as I thought the snow would not be deep enough for snowshoes. And my snowshoes really suck on steeper ground.
I started from Wasserauen and took the direct road to Ebenalp from the north side. The forest path (black piste) looked to be too snowy, so I tried Gartenalp. That was also very snowy, and it started suddenly raining, so I went under a tree and put on my crampons. After waiting for a few minutes for the shower to stop, I resumed the climb. Then it started again. I got some shelter three times in total. The weather report said there was a singular rain cloud over me. After the rain stopped again, I continued easily towards the col.
Schaefller was in clouds. The santis webcam showed it also in the clouds, so I decided to turn towards Ebenalp. The going was rather easy. At the hut, I removed the crampons. I tried to go towards the cave. There was snow in places on the path.
The cave entrance was completely snowed in, so I had to turn back. It probably needs a couple of more weeks to melt.
Then I went down the forest path, which actually avoids the black piste run, so I could go down without any crampons. The remainder was rather uneventful.
