Färenstöckli + Roggenstock at sunset

Another worthwhile after-work sunset hike, this time onto the Farenstöckli and the Roggenstock.

I park the car at the church in Oberiberg. There's an asphalted road to Stafel and then a hiking path to the saddle between Roggenstock and Farenstöckli. I go south along the ridge towards the Farenstöckli, first on a comfortable path, but the terrain soon gets steeper. At the foot of the main Farenstöckli rocks, I move out a little into the west face. After a short, very steep grass traverse, there are obvious traces on the ground climbing very steeply up towards the Farenstöckli (T5+, not advisable on descent). Using all available means (earth steps, brittle rock, small trees...) I work myself up and end up directly at the summit cross. Judging by the log book, the Farenstöckli seems to be getting more popular: my entry is already the eighth this year...

I descend from the Farenstöckli on the normal route over the south ridge. This goes straight ahead across a first notch in the ridge (exposed, briefly T5), after which the terrain becomes easier. Soon, it is possible to hike down towards the Oberroggen alp. After traversing below the Farenstöckli, the saddle below the Roggenstock is soon reached again. I reach the Roggenstock summit nicely in time for sunset. One other photographer is also present to capture the atmosphere.

After the sun is gone, I hike down along the unmarked path on the Roggenstock east ridge. This path is rather eroded and covered by annoying loose scree in places, but otherwise it's a scenic route. At Roggenegg there is no sign of Roggen-Fredy, only of his dog (barks but does not bite). A nicely constructed path connects Roggenegg and P. 1454. Afterwards, it's mostly asphalted roads back down to Oberiberg.
