After two via ferratas on Saturday (Cascade du Dar and Tête aux Chamois) and a night at the Diablerets SAC hut, our SAC Uto group prepared for an easy glacier hike onto the eponymous summit of the Diablerets massif. At 3210m, it is also the highest point of canton Vaud.

---

We are blessed with a well-timed spell of good weather. Storms are predicted for the afternoon, but the sun is still shining brightly when we set off in the morning. We take the easy option of taking the first cable car up to Scex Rouge at 9.10am. This leaves less than 500m of ascent to the Diablerets summit.

First we cross the Glacier de Tanfleuron, which is defaced by several ski lifts. After the summit of Le Dôme at 2986m, there is a short, easy scramble down onto the Glacier des Diablerets. A fixed rope is available, but hardly necessary. The Glacier des Diablerets is unspoilt by ski lifts. You're suddenly in a wild environment, but the ascent itself is very easy, with gentle slopes all the way. There's not even any need for us to put on our crampons.

We had some views of Weisshorn and Dent Blanche early on, but by the time we reach to the summit, the 4000m peaks of the Valais are obscured by clouds. The views to the north are still perfect, though. Lake Geneva is visible behind the remarkable summits of Tour d'Ai and Tour de Mayen. We have delightful bird's-eye view of the entire Waadtländer Alpen.

On descent, we have a lunch break on Le Dôme, while a glider plane makes spectacular turns around the Quille du Diable. Another short walk across the Glacier de Tanfleuron, with great views of the pyramid-shaped Oldenhorn, and we're back at the Scex Rouge cable car.

----

The cable car makes the Diablerets a relatively short and easy ascent for a 3000m summit. Beyond Le Dôme however, you don't see anything any more of the Glacier 3000 infrastructure, so the tour still has a proper mountain atmosphere. It's a great end to a successful Diablerets weekend. Many thanks to Tourenleiter Michael Stockmeyer for organizing and to the other SAC Uto members for the company.
