On Saturday we set out rather late at 11:00 from the Bettmerhorn going down to the glacier at marvelous weather which should bless us during the whole trip.
Access:
The way down was a little tricky since parts of the path where covered with a big rockfall. There are Stone-Man the closer we got to the glacier which guide us to an easy access. Once on the ice we headed towards the Olmenhorn which provided an easy passage (see waypoints). If you head straight to the Mittelaletsch-glacier center you end up in a region full of enormous crevasses.
After the Glacier we followed a pleasant path into the Mittelaletsch, then followed up the galcier until we where underneath the hut. Some descriptions recommend to go up the glacier until your on the height of the hut but since fresh car-sized ice-blocks where coming of the steep galcier-end we decided to do a bit of climbing directly to the hut (grade 3 to 4+).
Hut:
At arrival at 19:00 we learned that a 16-person group from austria in military clothings & sleepingbags had squatted the hut designed for 12 people, but they arrived after the swiss couple which sticked to the guideline stated on the Mittelaletsch-Biwak website that the hut is not suited for bigger groups. So plus the two of us we where 20 people stuffed into the little huts beds and floor.
Summit :
We let a little head-start to the soldiers (which needed almost 45 min to put on their pants) and followed at 5:00 the stone-man path up to the joch, along the edge until the last part which is a bit tricky. So we avoided opposing the herd on the narrow edge and waited until they slowly came down. With the heavenly weather (sunshine pure, no wind) on top we couldn't be happier.
Retreat:
On the way down we did a little break at our hut (now almost empty with two germans) where I changed my thermal top (grey Icebreaker) which unfortunately I forgot hanging at the antenna when we we went down.
after crossing the glacier again we went up the Eggishorn side for about 400 m until we hit the path leading to Bettmeralp where the Gondola takes you down to the trainstation.

In case anybody finds a grey Icebreaker (200) long top, it would be awesome if you'd take it down and give me a notice at toerst(at)gmail.com!! thx
