Motivation:
As a regular Rigi hiker, and having also cycled Ibergeregg Pass, both of which provide excellent views of the Mythens, I always wondered if the Mythen is really a hike or technical rock climbing. I longed to go nearer and see it for myself and, if possible, do it.
Anyway, after doing some internet research and checking up with people who had done it before, I decided to attempt it with my son who had been hearing for too long this "pet project" of dad.
The hike:
We started at 12:00 noon from the Schwyz Bahhof.
The hike from Schwyz to Holzegg is through thick vegetation, which was not exactly pleasant as the ground was moist and insects were abundant. We reached Holzegg around 3 pm. We then followed the excellently marked route to Grosser Mythen. It was very enjoyable, we reached the top around 4 pm.
After relaxing for about an hour, we began the descent. Unfortunately it began to rain just as we were descending. So we had to descend very slowly, testing to make sure each step was secure, and used the fixed ropes present at the dangerous sections.
We reached Alpthal Brunni around 6 pm, only to realize that we had just missed the last bus to Einseilden, so we had to walk all the way to Einsiedeln until about 9 pm to catch a train back home.
