After a long pause of 6 years (knee and back issues) we made again a trip to the Alps, our first walk was a try to climb Monte Vago from the Forcola di Livigno 2315m. The route to Monte Vago isn't indicated, you have to start by following the direction to Piz Ursera, around 2400m there's a short steep part which might demand a short use of the hands, at 2461m the paths split up : you have to take the left option and leaving the Piz Ursera route, very shortly after the split up you have to cross a bourn, thereafter there's a section where you have to take care not the loose the route, but with a chart it is very easy to find the way. Around 2800m we had to cross two small snowfields with underneath Lago Vago 2687m, the col is at 2906m, from then on you have to walk/climb on the ridge, which is far more difficult, we stopped at 2945m, from then on the use of hands was really necessary : there was a threat of thunderstorms and it was Natalie's first mountain experience, so we made the call to return.
The other people who climbed Monte Vago gave it a T2 or T3 grading, when I compare it with Piz Languard 3261m which is in the neighborhood, I find it more difficult and less save > most people gave Piz Languard a T3 notation, so T4- seems me logical for this mountain. I would not recommend going higher than the col in wet conditions and the part between 2500 and 2600m could be difficult to trace with bad visibilities.
