Situata nella più grande area protetta dell'Africa (il Parco Nazionale Namib-Naukluft), Sossusvlei è probabilmente l'attrazione più spettacolare e più conosciuta della Namibia.
Caratterizzato dalle grandi dune rosse che lo circondano, Sossusvlei è un grande 'pan' bianco, salato e argilloso, frequentato tutto l'anno dai visitatori della Namibia.
Le dune in questa zona sono tra le più alte del mondo, raggiungendo quasi 400 metri.
In lingua Nama, "Sossus" significa "un luogo di ritrovo per l'acqua", "Vlei" in afrikaans significa " lago poco profondo", questo è il luogo dove le dune si uniscono impedendo al fiume Tsauchab di scorrere ulteriormente, 60 km a est fino all'Oceano Atlantico.
A causa dell'aridità del deserto del Namib, il fiume raramente arriva fino a qui e il Pan rimane asciutto in quasi tutti gli anni.
Nonostante le dure condizioni del deserto,  nell'area si può trovare una grande varietà di piante e animali che si sono adattati per sopravvivere.
Le dune del Namib sono state create dalla sabbia (originata nel Kalahari) trasportata dal vento che qui soffia da tutte le direzioni, creando dune "a stella", chiamate così perché con molte  "diramazioni".
La sabbia è stata originata cinque milioni di anni fa ed è composta principalmente da minuscoli granelli rivestiti da un sottile strato di ossido di ferro, che conferisce al Namib il suo caratteristico colore rosso.

Big Daddy
Questa magnifica duna si trova tra Sossusvlei e Deadvlei e con 325 metri è più alta di Sossusvlei.
La cima è a 800 m sul livello del mare.
La vista sul deserto del Namib è mozzafiato.
La salina di Deadvlei è quasi in verticale sotto la cresta di Big Daddy Dune.
Confrontando l'immagine di Google Earth del 2014 con la nostra traccia GPS, abbiamo verificato che la cima della duna si è spostata da 100 verso nord (2019)
Big Daddy  non è la duna più alta nel deserto del Namib. il primato appartiene alla Dune 7 di 383m.

Salita
Il momento migliore per salire questa duna è il mattino presto, quando la temperatura è più frescha.
Si entra nel Parco a Sesriem , da qui, la strada è asfaltata e si procede facilmente verso Sossusvlei.
E' un viaggio spettacolare, su entrambi i lati della strada si costeggiano imponenti dune di sabbia  e si vedono ombre impressionanti su un lato della duna, mentre l'altro lato è immerso nella luce del sole.
Dopo circa un'ora si arriva nel parcheggio alla fine della strada asfaltata e usando un servizio navetta in fuoristrada si raggiunge Sossusvlei dove sotto un grande albero di acacia si può godere di un poco d'ombra.
Big Daddy è di li fronte a te.
La via usuale verso la cima è percorre  in piano il Pan a sud della duna, percorso più di un chilometro e mezzo si inizia a salire verso la vetta.

Però la cresta che percorrendo tutta alla duna porta in cima a Big Daddy è così invitante che decidiamo di seguirla integralmente.
Ci vogliono in media 40 minuti per raggiungere la prima sommità, con fantastici panorami sulle dune, la vista dall'alto di Dead Vlei.
Si continua in discesa lungo la cresta per poi salire nuovamente fino a congiungersi con il percorso usuale di salita.
Si continua per la cresta e quando arrivi in cima, sembra che hai veramente conquistato uno dei giganti più della natura.

Per la discesa due possibilità: percorrere la via usuale o un modo più divertente: buttarsi giù dal lato nord, quasi verticale, della duna, in cinque minuti si può arrivare al piano desertico sottostante di Deadvlei, una pan bianco con alberi di camelthorn spinosi morti che hanno fino a 600 anni.
Noi preferiamo le creste percviò abbiamo percorso la via usuale attraversando il Pan a sud della duna fino a Sossusvlei.

Informazioni pratiche
Il cancello del parco, appena dopo Sesriem ed è aperto tra l'alba e il tramonto.
Da qui, con 65 km in auto si raggiunge Sossusvlei (circa un'ora)
Alla base ddella Dune 45 - 45 km dal cancello - c'è un piccolo parcheggio e una toilette a secco.
Sossusvlei ha un parcheggio più grande con più servizi igienici e un'area picnic. Non c'è acqua, quindi portane in abbondanza.
Il percorso oltre questo parcheggio (altri 4 km fino a Sossusvlei) può essere coperto solo con un veicolo 4x4.
In alternativa, esiste un servizio di trasferimento in fuoristrada, oppure puoi camminare.
Il clima qui è estremo, anche in inverno.
I visitatori dovrebbero portare almeno due litri di acqua, crema solare, cappellino da sole, occhiali da sole e camicia a maniche lunghe.
Ricorda che il sole si riflette anche verso l'alto dalla sabbia!

Sossusvlei - Big Daddy Dune

Situated in the largest conservation area in Africa (the Namib-Naukluft National Park), Sossusvlei is possibly Namibia’s most spectacular and best-known attraction.

Characterised by the large red dunes that surround it, Sossusvlei is a large, white, salt and clay pan and is a great destination all year round.

The dunes in this area are some of the highest in the world, reaching almost 400 meters.
In the Nama language, "Sossus" means "a gathering place for water". "Vlei" is Afrikaans for "a shallow lake", as it is the place where the dunes come together preventing the Tsauchab River to flow any further, some 60km east of the Atlantic Ocean. 

However, due to the dry conditions in the Namib Desert the River seldom flows this far and the pan remains bone-dry most years. 

Despite the harsh desert conditions in the area, one can find a wide variety of plants and animals that have adapted to survive.

The dunes of the Namib, sand originated in the Kalahari, were created by sand being carried on the wind that  in Sossusvlei itself blows from all directions meaning the dunes are known as "star" dunes - as they cause the sand to form a star shape with multiple "arms".

The sand here is five million years old and It is comprised mostly of tiny grains of coated in a thin layer of iron oxide, giving the Namib its distinctive red color.

Big Daddy
This magnificent dune is situated between Sossusvlei and Deadvlei and at 325 meters it dwarfs the other dunes.
The summit is 800m above sea level.
The views of the Namib Desert  is breath-taking. 
From the ridge of Big Daddy Dune, the salt pan of Deadvlei appears almost vertically below.
Comparing Google Earth image of 2014 with our Gps track we found that the top of the dune has moved 100 to north (2019)
At 325 meters, Big Daddy is the tallest dune in Sossusvlei but not in the Namib Desert - that honor belongs to Dune 7, which has been measured at 388m. 

Climbing Big Daddy
A early start as the best time to visit the dunes is the early morning, when the temperatures are cooler.
Once inside the park, the roads are paved, so the going was smooth and easy as we headed towards Sossusvlei park.
This journey into is spectacular as you pass towering sand dunes on either side of the road, and you get impressive shadows forming on one side of the dune, while the other side is bathed in sunlight.
After an hour or so we arrived at the end of the paved road and using a 4WD transfer service we reached Sossusvlei where a big Acacia tree may give you some shadow.
Big Daddy is in front of you.
The usual route to the top is on the flat pan south of the dune, you walk for 1700m and then climb to the summit.
But Big Daddy's crest was so inviting that we decide to follow it all.
It takes an average of 40 minutes to reach the first summit - which rewards with awesome dune panoramas, a peek down into Dead Vlei, and gorgeous photo opportunities.
Then you continue descending the crest until you climb again to join the usual route.You follow the crest and when you reach the summit, you have truly conquered one of nature's harshest giants.
There’s the long way down: to walk back along the ridge along the usual way; and a fun way: to throw yourself down the almost vertical sand dune, it  may last less than five minutes, as you can run off the north side of the dune to the desert floor below. At the bottom you find Deadvlei (dead marsh in English), a white clay pan with dead camelthorn trees which are up to 600 years old.We love the crest so we followed the usual route and continued to Sossusvlei crossing the south pan.

Practical Information
The park gate is just past Sesriem, and is open between sunrise and sunset.
From here, the 65km drive to Sossusvlei takes about an hour.
At the base of Dune 45 - 45km from the gate - there is a small parking area and a dry toilet.
Sossusvlei has a larger parking area with more toilets and a picnic area. There is no water, so bring plenty.
The route beyond this parking area (another 4km to Sossusvlei) can only be covered in a 4WD vehicle. Alernatively, there is a 4WD transfer service, or you can walk.
The climate here is extreme, even in winter.Visitors should bring at least two litres of water, sunscreen, a sunhat, sunglasses and long-sleeved shirt.
Be aware that the sun is also reflected upwards from the sand!
