Wildspitze over Brochkogeljoch

As the highlight of our Alpine course, we climbed the Wildspitze from the Vernagthütte. Starting at 5 o'clock in the morning, we set off in the dark. The road descends to the rivercrossing and from there on up to the foot of the Vernagtferner. The first part of the glacier was aper (middle of July), however, higher up the crevasses were still very much covered in snow. The ascent up to the Brochkogeljoch is very easy and not very steep. The Brochkogeljoch itself is a steep gorge of ice and snow, but not really worth securing with ropes. From the top of the Brochkogeljoch we got very bad weather - complete whiteout. We had a guide with us, but without a guide a GPS is very much necessary if you don't want to get lost (when we descended the mountain, the tracks were wiped out by fresh snow). We followed the curve around the mountainside. From there, you can normally see the ever present trail up to the ridge of the mountain. The routes comming from the Braunschweigerhütte and the Breslauerhütte join our trail here. There is still a lot of snow here. According to our guide, there are a lot of crevasses normally, so we have to stay on the tracks. The tracks zigzag on the mountain. The last part is an easy rock climb to the top - not for people with severe fear of heights. Unfortunately, we did not see a thing on the summit. Still a very good climb. The advantage of this route is that there aren't too many people ascending from this side. The Breslauer route is much buzzier.
