On a San Francisco trip, visiting the Golden Gate Bridge is obviously a must. Most tourists just drive to the south end, take a few pictures, and maybe walk up to the first leg of the bridge. Others cross the bridge on a bike tour, and a third group takes the car across the bridge and drives up to Hawk Hill, which offers a stunning view of the bridge and the SF Bay Area. So why not combine all of this in a single hike? As often, exploring an area by foot is slow but much more intense than biking or driving. Even if the hike is technically trivial, the scenery is stunning, you have a chance of actually seeing hawks on Hawk Hill, and I would award it 5 stars.

Park the car in one of the free parking areas south of the bridge (good luck on weekends, I guess). Then cross the bridge in the pedestrian lane. After the first leg, I found it virtually empty, and this on a clear Friday afternoon (maybe two dozen other tourists). On the other side, there is a viewpoint to the right, which is accessible by car and hence very crowded. Head back a few meters, then take the pedestrian underpass to get to the other side of the road. From there, follow the dirt trail up the hill, which is a short cut for the auto road (Conzelman Rd). After that, just follow the curb of the auto road (not much traffic and strict speed limit). You'll pass three viewpoints in the form of pullouts. The last and highest viewpoint, on top of Hawk Hill, is only for those brave enough to leave the car and walk 100 meters from the pullout, on a fairly steep logging road (T1).

Return on the same way.

The net hiking time is around 3 hrs but obviously you should plan for lots of photo stops.

The best hiking time is February and March, where the chance of fog is lowest. In summer it is very likely to be foggy.
