Departure at 02:30 in Ubud, about 2 hours drive to Pura Pasar Agung via good, paved roads.
Starting in the dark at 04:20 at the parking lot of the temple Pura Pasar Agung with the previously booked local guide (guides have a "small office" set up at the side of the carpark). First we ascent to the temple over stone steps. After a short prayer at the temple about 90 minutes hiking over some slippery, washed jungle trek to the tree line. Then about 50 minutes over easy / medium difficulty rocks and gravel (volcanic) to the summit, sometimes a bit slippery, depending on the rainfall of the previous days. Shortly before the summit we overtook another group that had started at 02:30 from the carpark: More inexperienced / less fit hikers take about 3.5h-4h for the climb.
Reached the summit after 02 hours 15 minutes in time for sunrise with a great view. Breakfast on the summit - The guide carried hot water for coffee and tea. After sunrise on the same route back down in 02 hours 10 minutes (again inexperienced hikers would take 3.5-4h back down).
Recently, there is also a possibility of reaching the slightly higher west summit from Pura Pasar Agung (approx. +30 minutes ascent). However, this route is only passable (and recommended) during the drier months of June-August and evaluated with a little more difficult T4. The path goes off about 300 meters below the west summit to the left and is marked with red and white circles.
If a sarong is brought along the temple (highest temple in Bali) can be visited on the way back.
A local guide is recommended due to the non-calculable weather conditions as well as the need to trek through the jungle in the dark. The guides are mostly farmers from the surrounding villages and organized as a cooperative. They charge IND 350,000 (April 2011) per ascent. IND 50,000 of which go to the temple. English-speaking guide and first to find the connection from the southern route to the western summit: Wayan WIDI YASA, Tel: +62 852 372 50607.
