Matsukura Castle

After visiting the Hida Folk Village, we exited, and found a trailhead for the hike up to the ruins of the Matsukara Castle a short distance up the road. There were signs warning of a recent bear sighting, and bells to ring, but we didn't encounter any wildlife, just a couple of hikers. The trail was rocky in places, but easy to follow and clear of obstacles. The lower part of the trail crossed a paved road several times; you could drive up to a picnic area with restrooms and start the hike from there, too (followed the road on the way down, out of curiosity). Other than some massive walls, there wasn't much that remains of the castle, but the views were great.
