The English*man takes pleasure in walking through the muddy lanes and fields, in any season. This might have to do with the absence of any rocky terrain in the area. This is particularly true in Kent, also known as the garden of England. Many walkers do therefore take to gumboots ('Wellington Boots"), though hiking shoes are decidedly more comfortable, provided you got someone cleaning them (thanks, Tobs!).
Scotney castle is a wonderful starting point, and hence a wonderful destination, with a coffee-shop providing tea and biscuits upon your return.
Kent is also known for its hop-industry; and while in earlier years any continental-European was lamenting about english beer-culture, we now delight in discovering the different types of bitter, lager, stouts and what-not.
(Needless to say that Scotney Castle is part of the National Trust, which is guarantee of good educational value and solid outdoor pleasures).
