Rote Wand / Croda Rossa (2818 m): A short summer scramble with a nice view

Autoren : qhfreddy

Wegpunkte:  Rote Wand / Croda Rossa 2818 m (12)
Ausrichtung:---

We leave the parking area at the top of Staller Sattel southwards, a mess of cracks lines the valley floor here but one should eventually find themselves on a well trodden trail along Stallerbach. We head right to cross the stream and follow another clear trail up next to Schafleger 2277m, a quick deviation to see the view here is highly recommended.

Thereafter we follow the trail down in the direction of Antholzer See but keep to the left most paths at Obere Steinzgeralm 2076m to stay on the valley side rather than descending. This section is less well marked, OSM marks an approximation of where the trail lies. As we turn further southwards, the terrain rises steeply with scree covering the remains of a once glaciated valley.

At around 2400 m, for a challenge I decide to head to the left of the now barely marked trail and straight up towards the ridge. The scree becomes looser approaching the rocky ridge and a Chamois calls from above. The ridgeline is reached by a short scramble (T4+/T5) slightly west of P. 2707 (ISM 25.000) and then turn for an easy walk to the summit.

A fantastic view greets us from the top: The entire Pustertal with the Dolomites as a backdrop to the south, and to the north the imposing wall of the Zillertaler Hauptkamm.

The descent is an easy walk down the green Stallerbach to join our previous path back to the Staller Sattel.
