What is a community? A community is a place which is dedicated to a particular subject. It contains a forum, a list of tours and a picture gallery. The subjects are for example: ski tours, safety in the mountains, etc. The complete list of hikr.org communities can be found here.

How can I participate in a community? You can participate in a community by adding tours, pictures and forum messages. In order to do so you have to be subscribed to this community.

In order to add a hike report or a picture to a community you have to use the button: « Post to community » which appears on the right side of the page of a hike report or a picture.

In order to add a new forum message to a community you have to open the homepage of the corresponding community and click on the link « Add message » which appears at the top of the page. This link also exists on the forum page. Note that you can post a comment to a forum message even if you are not member.

How do you subscribe to a community? Every hikr user can subscribe to any community. In order to subscribe to a community you have to go to the community page and use the link « Join this community ». Once subscribed to a community you can always unsubscribe too.

Why subscribe? By subscribing to a community you can post new messages in the community forum, post hikr reports and photos to the community. In addition you will receive an email about all the new messages posted to the forum.

How can I create a new community? Every hikr user can create a new community. It is very simple: go to the page of your communities and click on the link « Create a community ». The person who creates a new community will become the administrator (admin) of this community. The admin can delete the messages in the forum, remove pictures and hike reports from the community. He/she can also unsubscribe members.

Why should I create a new community? I would like to ask the members of the site a question, how can I do this? 

A good solution is to post your question to an existing community. If such a community doesn't exist yet you can create it. It is better if the communities are kept more general with lots of messages and members. If you would like to ask the question « What is the best way to climb the Matterhorn » for example, it would be best if you asked this question in a forum called « Suggestions for routes ». The bad solution is to create the community « What is the best way to climb the Matterhorn » with the only message on how to best climb the Matterhorn.

In any case you could always ask the admin or post a question in the « meta » community.

How can I follow a discussion in a forum? It is possible to receive an email notification for every comment posted to a message in a forum. In order to do so use the link « Subscribe to comments per email » which appears at the beginning of the « Comments » section of the message page. You can do that even if you are not member of the community.
