it has to do with the obtuse angle of the sun in the evening and morning when the light rays have to travel a longer distance through the air whereby the shorter wave blues are dispersed leaving only the longer wave reds. or something like this. i am not a physicist ;-)
That effect is because of the sun's rays...when the day's first light falls on a peak. I have seen the effect in the Himalayas. Looks awesome in realtime. The sky takes on myriad hues as the suns rises...Magnificent is the word to describe the scene...A very nice photograph
