From Steve Roper and Allen Steck: "Fifty Classic Climbs of North America" They attribute this to Sioux Indian legend of a bear attacking some girls. They hop onto a rock and pray to the stone god to assist them against the bear. The rock grows as does the bear which scars the rock with his claws. The girls are saved becoming Pleides in the sky. Known to the Sioux as Bear Lodge or Bad God Tower, settlers called it Devils Tower.
