Speaking of difficulty: did you need crampons at all? Ice axe?

No, we didn't need them and thanks to the tip of someone at the Whitney Portal we didn't take them along, but left them in the car there.
Due to the little snow in the Sierra last winter, we could almost completely avoid snow in the whole mountaineers route.
However, in a year with average amounts of snow, you do need an ice axe and crampons on this route in mid June.
