Ascending to Pizzo Molare from Gariva is a relatively straight forward hike which offers a spectacular view from the summit (provided weather assists). This peak is located on the long ridge separating Tessin’s Val Leventina from Valle di Blenio. The “normal” route kicks off from Gariva, a tiny hamlet almost overhanging Valle di Blenio. The first easy leg brings to Capanna Piandios, from where the follow-up of the hike and the summit of the day become well visible. Going ahead, the paved road winds left towards Pian Laghetto and Cambra. Before that a signpost with a number of indications would be found, but there’s nothing on it as far as Pizzo Molare or Bocchetta di Sasso Bianco. Well, actually there is almost no path, but definitely what one has to do is getting to Bocchetta di Sasso Bianco. A walk across the blooming fields is then required, aiming at that target, which is right up there perfectly in sight. We went up gently, the three of us, passing over some residual snow patches which Toto appreciated greatly. Here and there some occasional traces could be seen, but very intermittently. We reached the Sass Sprügh area and decided to walk up the steep grassy ramp that lies underneath the Bocchetta. A somewhat tyring exercise but, once there, the majority of the effort was behind us. Here a couple of good paths appear, one of them pushing up towards the summit, which is reached within just maybe 15 more minutes of easy ascent. The 360° view is really breathtaking, under good weather conditions. We could benefit only partially, as clouds kept on roaming up and around. Rheinwaldhorn was scarcely visible, as well as Scopi and Pizzo Campo Tencia. A sandwich, a drink and a note on the summit-book, as the weather went on turning bad. We went down to Bocchetta di Sasso Bianco and decided to follow the path heading eastwise, along the southern flank of Pizzo Molare. At some point we necessarily had to get off this path in order to descend back to Sass Sprügh and, at the same time, it started raining. Not exactly a showering rain, but we increased our speed, just in case things got worse.  Quite soon we reached Capanna Piandios where we could reward ourselves with a gourmand slice of the hut’s apple-pie. Hooray for Toto’s (and my own) second time atop Pizzo Molare!
