Since I had already been on many of the surrounding peaks close to Flims, it was time to pay a visit to the mountain called Atlas (2927 m). Even though this mountain is not as high as Piz Segnas or Piz Dolf, it still offers great panoramic views - especially on a day like this.
The most difficult part of the hike was the climbing section to get up to the plateau at the southern end of Atlas. Some climbing (II) is required. I followed the same approach as
Schlomsch, as shown here in this picture. Unfortunately I don't have any picture of my own that shows the entry point...
Exactly when I reached the summit of Atlas, a group of 5-6 other hikers came up from Fuorcla dil Segnas Sura. At the summit of Atlas the wind was blowing quite a bit, so I chose to have my lunch break at Fuorcla dil Segnas Sura.
Next, I wanted to hike to the minor southern summit of Piz Segnas (P.3012). But first there is a 10 m high rock wall which needs to be "climbed". Here I followed the same approach as
Mueri, see my picture here. I followed a shelf to the right side until it was possible to climb up more easily (I).
For the descent I went down the western couloir from Fuorcla dil Segnas Sura. That was not too difficult, but I had to be very cautious not to trigger any falling stones. I imagine that going up the same way must be very strenuous with all the loose scree.
Difficulties:
Naraus - La Siala on the marked trail: mainly T2
La Siala - elevation 2630 m below the cliff: T4-
Climbing up to the plateau: T5, II
Plateau - summit of Atlas: T4, I
Summit of Atlas - Fuorcla dil Segnas Sura: T3
Fuorcla dil Segnas Sura - past the rock wall towards P.3012: T4+, I
Further up to P.3012: T3
Down the couloir from Fuorcla dil Segnas Sura to Muletg da Sterls: T4+
Muletg da Sterls - Naraus: T2
Total hiking distance: 16 km
Equipment:
-hiking sticks
-helmet (used in the climbing sections, and in the couloir).
