iPhone App

Hi hikrs,

We're trying to make something cool for iPhone & Co.

The idea is to have a page where you can see on the map if some other hikrs are in proximity.
The problem is that we don't have any iPhone & Co. (Co.=Android, Nokia, or other modern mobile phone).

We started by doing a simple page where you can see a map and your position on the map.
The phone will ask you to share your current location, you have to answer "Yes", if you want see something.
For the moment, that's all we did.

The goal is to have the same map with you and all users in proximity, who allowed to share their position on the map with you.

Now, what we need is that you go on this page, test if it works for you and report the result here.
You can also send to admin@hikr.org a screenshot or a photo  of your phone with the page displayed.

The URL to try with you phone is
http://www.hikr.org/g.php

(The link will not work on your computer, because there is no location information there Seems that it can work on your computer too, especially with Chrome)

The location data stays in your browser, it's not transferred anywhere, so there is no privacy issues for this test. You can test it anywhere, nobody will know where you are.

Here how it looks like on the iPhone emulator:

Coole Idee.

Goog point :-)

In fact it's not an app, it's just web page. Title was intentionally misleading. It works with Android, Blackberry or Nokia. It works on a netbook. It works on anything with a location info and a browser.

And we think it's much better this way, because there is no install, we don't need to bother with AppStores and, last but not least, we are safe from evil Apple control!!!

Hallo Admins.

Someone already sent us a screenshot of Android HTC working. Maybe someone with an Android here can help you?

Does not work on a Nokia 5800, but I guess this is because it's an "old" phone (18 months is a long time in the phone world) that doesn't support location info...

Hi stephen,
They say here that it has GPS.

What happens exactly? Does it ask to share your position? If yes, it means that the browser supports geolocation but the GPS is disabled or cannot find your position (because you are inside a building for example).

I just get an error message (in English, which is strange):
"I'm sorry, but geolocation services are not supported by your browser"

Stani™ says: RE:

It means that your browser doesn't support geolocation. :-(
If you can install another browser, that may maybe work (but I'm absolutely not sure about that)

Strange that they sell a GPS-enabled phone with a browser that doesn't support it... :-/

Anyway, I will probably change my phone in a couple of months, so I will try again then.

Hi Stephen,

It's a problem of the browser program on the phone, not of the GPS of the phone.
In the past, it was not meant that we could access GPS-locations from inside the browser. This belongs to the new standard of HTML 5, used only by modern browsers.

Looks like it can work with Opera Mobile

Great idea! It also works on both iPhone and iPad (3G version) from abroad.
