Yes clay and other sediments are responsile for the red colour. These sediments are eroded by the river water.

Sorry, dear photographer - this is not Huanghe (Yellow River) but Jinsha Jiang, the upper reaches of Chang Jiang on the border of Sichuan and Yunnan provinces, China. Still a nice shot.
