These are called "Artist's Conks" in Canada. They are used by some artists as a medium for painting, like a canvas. I have used them myself. Very nice to paint on. and interesting shapes. Flat on the bottom side facing the ground, once removed from the tree they can be dried out and then used. Cheers!
