Hello inalaska.
Yes, this is avalanche mitigation.
Where do you live? Your name 'inalaska' and mine 'denali2002' have some similarity...

I've lived in Homer Alaska for 35 years, though I'm an 11 generation New Jersey gal. We're in the process of getting our Mt. McKinley changed back to its real native name of Denali. Did you climb her in '02? I've got a few years on you I think, and my long distance 'climbing knees' are gone, but I sure love all the pictures. An old Swiss Homeroid, Yule Kilcher ( also one of Alaska's first Representatives) always said that he stayed here because it reminded him of his Swiss homeland. I've even seen a trail through some woods that looked JUST like our trail in the woods in Morristown NJ.!!! Small world! I wish I knew every one of you crazy climbers! but at least now I know one of them....so give a thumbs up from a fan in Alaska when you pass them on the trails! How did you get the picture up? I have nice ones of both Alyeska..our world class ski resort in Girdwood on the Kenai Peninsula, and Hatcher's Pass above Anchorage, which has yet to be really developed but is really spectacular...More later Denali, I have chickens to feed, and I think we're getting snow tonight. By the way, I'm Sallie
