From Ticino to Uri via Rotondo hut

We planned this tour long time ago; it was difficult to find a weekend, where all the participants could join. Although it snowed in the Gotthard region one week before, the warm temperatures of the last days and the good weather forecasts convinced us to undertake the tour. To be prepared for any eventuality we took our snowshoes with us.
Day 1: for the first day we planned an easy 4 hrs hike from Villa (Bedretto) to the Rotondo hut via Passo Cavanna and Ronggergrat. We started in Villa and went up to the Passo Cavanna via p.1955, p.2222 and p.2247. We encountered some snow starting 100m below the Passo Cavanna, not even enough to put on our snowshoes... but suddenly the situation changed... On the north side of the Passo Cavanna more than 20 cm of relatively fresh snow were laying on the way to the Ronggergrat. Whereas the ascent to the highest point of our tour with the snowshoes was relatively ok, we encountered big problems in crossing the edge to the Hüenersattel. This part was not only difficult but also quite dangerous. From the difficulty point of view the situation did not really change till we were a few metres from the hut... The descent from the Hüenersattel, crossing stones covered with about 30 cm of snow, without really recognizing the signs of the alpine trail we were supposed to follow, was not always funny... Finally, after more than seven instead of the planned four hours we reached the Rotondo hut!
Day 2: the ascent to the Tälligrat was easy, the terrain wet but not covered with snow. The Tälligrat itself was easy to cross, however we needed again our snowshoes... The descent to Stelliboden (at the first intersection take the path on the right), on powder snow was real fun! We could still continue on the last snowfields till Höhenbiel, then the fun was over and we were walking on the car road to Realp, where we took the bus.
In general I would say that this tour is not to recommend, when too much snow is laying on the Ronggergrat.
The ascent to the Cavanna Pass is easy and is T3 only starting from p.2247. The Ronggergrat under normal conditions would also be classified as T3 whereas the descent to the Rotondo hut is T4. In our case, because of the snow, it is not exaggerated to classify the trail as WT4. The easy climbing refers to the part between Cavanna and Ronggergrat where again because of the snow we had to improvise a little bit. The path of the second day did not present particular difficulties and can be classified as T3.
Thanks to Simone, Gino, Raffo and Damiano, who accompanied me on this adventurous trail.
