No, for fast moving animals (or objects) I don't use a tripod (I wouldn't have had time here to set it up anyway).
As soon as I saw the kite, I quickly set the camera to the automatic "sports" mode, followed the bird through the lens and just kept the finger on the trigger. My camera then shoots about 4 images per second...
